How to Use Retargeting Pixels on Your Music Pages

If you're running ads to promote your music—Instagram ads, TikTok promos, Google campaigns—you're probably flying blind. You can see how many people clicked your ad, but you have no idea how many of them actually listened.

That's because most music marketing tools don't support retargeting pixels. Your smart link redirects fans to Spotify, and the pixel never fires on the streaming platform. The conversion data disappears into a black hole.

Gatefolded now supports Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, and Google Ads / GA4 tags on your public pages. Here's what that means and how to set it up.

Why pixels matter for music marketing

Retargeting pixels are small scripts that track what visitors do on your page. When someone visits your Gatefolded page from an ad, the pixel fires and tells the ad platform “this person visited.” More importantly, it fires custom events when they take meaningful actions.

This unlocks three things that change how you run music ads:

  • Conversion tracking. Instead of measuring “link clicks,” you can measure “people who actually played a track” or “people who listened to the whole song.” That's the difference between vanity metrics and real data.
  • Retargeting audiences. Build an audience of people who visited your page and retarget them with follow-up ads. “Show this ad to everyone who played my new single but didn't sign up for emails.”
  • Lookalike audiences. Upload your pixel audience to Meta or TikTok and tell them “find me more people like this.” The ad platform uses its data to find similar users who are likely to engage with your music.

What events Gatefolded fires

Gatefolded doesn't just fire a generic PageView. It sends custom events for the actions that actually matter to musicians:

  • PageView — Someone visited your page
  • Play — Someone started listening to a track
  • CompleteListening — Someone listened to a track all the way through
  • Download — Someone downloaded a track
  • EmailSignup — Someone subscribed via your email collection form

These events fire across all three pixel platforms simultaneously. If you have a Meta Pixel and a TikTok Pixel configured, both get the same events.

How to set it up

Setup takes about two minutes:

  1. Go to your artist dashboard and expand Public Artist Page
  2. Scroll to Tracking & Pixels
  3. Enter your pixel IDs:
    • Meta Pixel ID — the numeric ID from your Meta Events Manager (looks like 123456789012345)
    • TikTok Pixel ID — from your TikTok Ads Manager (looks like ABCD1234)
    • Google Measurement ID — from Google Analytics or Google Ads (looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX or AW-XXXXXXXXX)
  4. Click Save Profile

That's it. Pixels are now active on your public artist page and every album share page under that artist. No code to edit, no tag managers to configure.

Privacy on gated pages

If your album is password-protected or restricted to an email allowlist, pixel scripts don't fire until the visitor has been authenticated. This means your industry contacts—label A&Rs, press, playlist curators—aren't tracked by your ad pixels when reviewing unreleased music. Pixels only fire on public, unlocked pages.

The bigger picture

Most musicians treat ads as “spend money, hope for streams.” With pixel data, you can actually close the loop. Run an Instagram ad pointing to your Gatefolded page. See how many people played your music. See how many signed up for emails. Retarget the ones who listened but didn't subscribe. Build a lookalike audience from your most engaged listeners and find more people like them.

This is how every other industry does digital advertising. Musicians have just been locked out of it because their landing pages were redirects to streaming platforms. When your page is the destination—not a redirect—you get the data.
